Volunteer "Dan the Balloon Man"
Receives Presidential Volunteer Service Award

Known as "Dan the Magic Man," Dan's balloon art has been featured in the Holland Sentinel, the Muskegon Chronicle and the Grand Rapids Press. During the summer, Dan is a regular at downtown Holland's Thursday Night Street Performances. His balloon art is enjoyed by young and old at Logan's Restaurant most weeks. and, Dan is an entrepreneur, running "Dan the Magic Man," his business where he is available for hire to entertain at special occasions.

Most of us would agree that Dan carries a full schedule and yet......he makes time to visit each of our Resthaven buildings WEEKLY, entertaining and visiting with our senior residents.

The President's Volunteer Service Award is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging United States citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents of the United States to live a life of service. This award not only highlights an individual for their gifts of service but realizes that at the heart of the volunteer spirit is the ability to INSPIRE others to get involved and make a difference in the communities we live in.

Dan Mutschler is definitely inspirational.

Dan may be talented but everyone here would agree that it is his warm, friendly, compassionate heart that wins him in the hearts of all. Residents, staff and even resident families look forward to his weekly visits. He truly makes a difference!

When asked what he loves most about Resthaven and what keeps him coming back each week, he simply said, "It is a lot of fun to share my craft and just see the smiles when people receive their balloon." When asked if he plans to stay eight more years, he replied with a robust, "Of course!"

Dan share his gifts further as an 8-year resident of Friendship House on Western Theological Seminary's campus in Holland, Michigan.
